Network: Improve network performance after an upgrade

Problem Summary Finesse 10.0(1) supports a different VM adapter type than Finesse 9.1(1). After you upgrade to Finesse 10.0(1), you must change the VM adapter type.
Error Message N/A
Possible Cause The Finesse OVA template for Release 10.0(1) contains different LRO and network adapter settings than the OVA template for Release 9.1(1). The Release 10.0(1) OVA template takes advantage of a newer VM network adapter and network performance benefits of using the LRO capability of ESXi. If you upgrade from Release 9.1(1) to 10.0(1), you must change your VM adapter type.
Recommended Action

Enable Large Receive Offload (LRO) on the ESXi server that hosts the Finesse VMs:

  1. Log in to the ESXi host or its VCenter with VSphere Client.
  2. Select the host VM and then select Configuration >Software: Advanced Settings.
  3. Select Net and scroll down slightly more than half way.
  4. Check the following parameters. If the value is 0 (disabled), change it to 1 (enabled).
    • Net.VmxnetSwLROSL
    • Net.Vmxnet3SwLRO
    • Net.Vmxnet3HwLRO
    • Net.Vmxnet2SwLRO
    • Net.Vmxnet2HwLRO
  5. If you change any of the preceding parameters, reboot the ESXi host to activate the changes.

Convert the VM network adapter from Flexible to E1000 for both the primary and secondary Finesse nodes:

Note: VSphere Client does not support changing the VM network adapter type. You must use VMware's VSphere PowerCLI commands to perform this task.

  1. Download, install, and configure PowerCLI. For more information, see http://www.vmware.com/go/powercli.
  2. Log in to the Finesse VM console as administrator.
  3. Run the Finesse CLI command utils system shutdown to shut down the Finesse server.
  4. Open a PowerCLI command window.
  5. Connect to VCenter with the CLI commandlet Connect-VIServer <VIServer name or IP address>.
  6. Log in with a username and password of a user who has permissions to manage the Finesse VMs.
  7. On the PowerCLI command window, run the command Get-Vm -Name "<Finesse server name>" | Get-NetworkAdapter | Set-NetworkAdapter -type E1000.  (for example, Get-Vm -Name "Finesse Primary Server" | Get-NetworkAdapter | Set-NetworkAdapter -type E1000).
  8. On VSphere Client, verify that the adapter type has changed to E1000.
    • Right-click the VM and select Edit Settings.
    • On the Hardware tab, click Network Adapter 1.
    • Ensure that Current adapter : E1000 appears in the Adapter Type section.
  9. Power on the Finesse VM.
  10. Repeat step 2 through 9 for the secondary Finesse node.
