Introduction

Known Issue: Why a CUPS license will not move from Demo to Permanent after license install

This note is specific to installing a permanent CUPS license file and after installing the license it still shows in Demo mode.

What Caused it?

This issue can be created by one of two reasons.

Having the incorrect MAC address attached to the license file the license will never move from Demo mode to Permanent. Secondly if the CUPS license file does not have the correct permission or is missing the needed attributes. (see below for example).

To confirm the MAC License is correct use an SSH session and log into the CUPS box and run the command:

admin: show status
The output of this command will give some information and the license information you need to have:
License MAC: e41f242xx224

If the license file has the incorrect MAC address this license will never move from Demo to Permanent mode.

The second reason is more common in which the new license file has been sent and you are not installing a proper CUPS license on your box.

A CUPS license is different than a Call Manager license file and only a CUPS license will work on a CUPS box. However you will not receive an error if you install the incorrect license on the CUP Server A CUPS license file should look something like:

A license file looks like:
INCREMENT ENT_PE_NODE cisco 7.0 permanent uncounted \
VENDOR_STRING=<Count>1</Count><OrigMacId>e41f242xx224</OrigMacId >
<LicMacId>E41F13771B21</LicMacId><LicFileVersion>2.0</LicFileVersion > \
HOSTID=e41f242xx224 \
NOTICE="<LicFileID>20100916072220412</LicFileID><LicLineID>1</LicLineID > \
PAK>1317J5B4093</PAK>" SIGN="155F 9C5C 649A 1937 81D4 892D \

5D56 ABE3 68DE 1323 0599 AE88 693C 30F7 072C E706 DE3A FBE0"

INCREMENT ENT_PROXY_NODE cisco 7.0 permanent uncounted \
VENDOR_STRING=<Count>1</Count><OrigMacId>e41f242xx224</OrigMacId >
<LicMacId>E41F13771B21</LicMacId><LicFileVersion>2.0</LicFileVersion> \
HOSTID=e41f242xx224 \
NOTICE="<LicFileID>20100916072220412</LicFileID><LicLineID>2</LicLineID > \

For CUPS being used for the Cisco Unified Personal Communicator
There are additional feature sets that this license can contain but at the very minimum the license file must have both:
INCREMENT ENT_PE_NODE and INCREMENT ENT_PROXY_NODE or the CUPS license file will not function as expected and keep the CUPS box in Demo mode.

For CUPS being used as a SIP Proxy Server only
The license file at minimum needs to have INCREMENT ENT_PE_NODE

A Call Manager license file will look like:
INCREMENT PHONE_UNIT cisco 7.0 permanent uncounted
VENDOR_STRING=<Count>1</Count><OrigMacId>e41f242xx224</OrigMacId >
<LicMacId>E41F13771B21</LicMacId><LicFileVersion>2.0</LicFileVersion> \
HOSTID=e41f242xx224 \
NOTICE="<LicFileID>20100916072220412</LicFileID><LicLineID>2</LicLineID > \
<PAK>1317J5B4093</PAK>" SIGN="1C21 BDA9 CEA7 B15F 6C49 DA38 \
4A27 E1DA 593C E34A 81B7 57AD FB66 F660 1849 1B3D E139 EF4F \
F434 21F4 ADFB 9F5C 5ACB 2A54 2FB4 82E8 A07A 991E 982F FBC6"

If you perform a quick glance at the license file before you install it if you see:
INCREMENT PHONE_UNIT cisco 7.0 permanent uncounted

This is a Call Manager License which will not work on a CUPS box.
No error will be given after the installation of an incorrect license file on a CUPS box.

If you are Re-hosting into vmware the license file will have the same format with a one difference:

Instead of:
INCREMENT ENT_PROXY_NODE cisco 7.0 permanent uncounted \
VENDOR_STRING=<Count>1</Count><OrigMacId>e41f242xx224</OrigMacId >
<LicMacId>E41F13771B21</LicMacId><LicFileVersion>2.0</LicFileVersion> \
HOSTID=e41f242xx224 \

The last entry will read HOSTID=HOSTNAME=e41f242xx224 \
instead of:
HOSTID=e41f242xx224 \

If you need to remove (delete) a license file from CUPS box log into an SSH session there are 2 ways of doing this:

The more straight forward way.
From the SSH admin prompt on the CUPS box run the command:
admin: file list license *

  1. This will give you a list of the files on the box.

admin: file delete license <file_name>

This will remove the unwanted license file from the server.

The more difficult way.

run sql select * from licenseinfo
pkid is the first colum in the output: (in example: 69e19253-2311-4783-8c0f-050364dff360
isvalid is the list line in the output and if the license has an 'f' you should remove this.

Please go to the SSH console (command line) and once logged into the CUPS box type the following two commands:

utils remote_account enable
utils remote_account create ciscotac 30

Send this output to the TAC team and they can use the output to get root access to this box for a short time (30 days in this example).

From root perform the following

  1. su informix
  2. dbaccess
  3. select "Query language"
  4. select DB = version@servername (usually the first DB)
  5. select "New"
  6. enter without quotes "delete from licenseinfo where pkid = '69e19253-2311-4783-8c0f-050364dff360'"
  7. hit 'Esc'
  8. select "Run"

In example:

delete from licenseinfo where pkid = '69e19253-2311-4783-8c0f-050364dff360'

What Can You Do?

If the Cisco licensing team sends you the incorrect license file it will have to be recreated for you. Please send the license back to the licensing team and let them know they sent you a Call Manager license. If there is still confusion you can attach the information in this WIKI. The team that also works specifically with CUPS can also assist.
