Introduction

The purpose of this document is to describe the functionality support of Best Effort Early Offer (BEEO) configuration on the Cisco Unified Communications Manager (Unified CM) - SIP Profile Configuration page and corresponding call flows in a call over SIP Trunk.

In Cisco Unified Communications Manager Release 10.0(1), to enable Early Offer you select a check box on the SIP Profile page. If this check box is selected, Unified CM must send out an initial Invite with SDP over SIP Trunk. In cases where SDP is not available from caller side, Unified CM inserts Media Termination Point (MTP) to provide Early Offer. But this makes Unified CM send audio only codecs, which means there is no video present in the initial call. Also, media resources are used to provide Early Offer, which customer may not want to use.

In Cisco Unified Communications Manager Release 10.5(1), Unified CM is enhanced to give another configuration drop down option on the SIP Profile page called Best Effort (no MTP inserted). With Best Effort (no MTP inserted), MTPs are never used to create an Offer. An Early Offer is sent only if the media characteristics of the calling device can be determined, if the media characteristics cannot be determined or not available a Delayed Offer is sent.

Design/Implementation

  • Inter Cluster SIP trunk (of BEEO profile) with transport protocol support for TCP runs between Seattle/Washington DC (SEA/WDC) and London Heathrow (LHR) clusters and vice versa cluster
  • Inter Cluster SIP trunk (of BEEO profile) with transport protocol support for TLS runs between SEA/WDC and LHR clusters and vice versa cluster
  • Inter Cluster SIP trunk (of BEEO profile) with transport protocol support for TCP runs between SEA/WDC and LHR clusters via San Francisco/New York (SFO/JFK) cluster and vice versa.
  • Inter Cluster SIP trunk (BEEO) with transport protocol support of TLS runs between SEA/WDC and LHR clusters via SFO/JFK cluster and vice versa.
  • Similarly the SIP trunks (BEEO) with transport protocol TCP and TLS support trunks run between SEA/WDC and VCS cluster.
  • SIP trunk (BEEO) runs between LHR and Cisco Unified Communications Manager Express (Unified CME) via SFO/JFK cluster.
  • SIP trunk (BEEO) runs between SEA/LHR and PSTN gateway in the respective sites.
  • SIP trunk (BEEO) runs between SEA/LHR and Cisco Unified Border Element (CUBE) component in the respective sites.
  • SIP trunk (BEEO) with TCP and TLS protocols support trunks run between SEA cluster and the Cisco Unity Connection (Unity Connection) component.
  • SIP trunk (BEEO) with TCP and TLS protocols support trunks run between SEA/WDC and Cisco TelePresence Conductor (TelePresence Conductor) component in Seattle Site.
  • SIP trunk (BEEO) with TLS trunk between SEA /LHR and Conductor component via SFO/JFK site.

Topologies

This section provides information about the Cisco Collaboration Systems Test Architecture topology. For a detailed description of Collaboration Systems test bed topology see: http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/voice_ip_comm/uc_system/V10-5-1/ipt-system-arch/stentMOD.html

Configuration

This section provides the high-level tasks and related information for configuring the BEEO in the collaboration reference architecture test bed.

The test bed recreates a SIP trunk (of BEEO type) between different components (SEA/WDC cluster, LHR Cluster, SFO/JFK cluster, Cisco VCS, Unified CME, CUBE, Voice Gateway, Unity Connection and TelePresence Conductor)

Setting Early Offer Feature

Select one of the following three options from the Early Offer support for voice and video calls field on the SIP Profile Configuration page:

  • Disabled (Default Value)
  • Best Effort (no MTP inserted)
  • Mandatory (insert MTP if needed)

The following rules apply in the UI for the interaction of the selected value in the Early Offer support for Voice and Video calls field with other selected values in fields on Unified CM-SIP Profile configuration page.

  • E2E — When the value of RSVP over SIP field is E2E, the Best Effort (no MTP is inserted) and Mandatory (insert MTP if needed) options are disabled.
  • ANAT — When the Enable ANAT check box is selected, the Best Effort (no MTP is inserted) and Mandatory (insert MTP if needed) options are disabled.
  • Send send-receive SDP in mid-call INVITE — this check box is enabled only when Best Effort (no MTP is inserted) and Mandatory (insert MTP if needed) are selected.
