Service User Account

The Directory Services service user account is a Windows user account that has special privileges on the Directory Services server. Before you install Directory Services, you must create this account in Windows. You may also choose to install and run Directory Services by using the default Administrator user account.

The service user account must have the following special privileges:

  • Local Administrator
  • Logon as a service

Note: We recommend that the service user account that you use to install and run Directory Services be a local user account that you create on the Directory Services server, rather than using a Windows domain account or an Active Directory account. Though not a requirement, using a local Windows account ensures that modifications or updates to the domain do not affect Cisco Unified MeetingPlace Directory Services operation.

Prerequisites

  • If you are a Cisco partner or technician responsible for installing Cisco Unified MeetingPlace Directory Services, review the Implementation Steps and Checklist.
  • Verify that your system meets the requirements that are specified in the System Requirements.
  • If you choose to identify a server by hostname rather than by IP address, ensure that DNS is enabled to resolve the hostname.
  • Ensure that the Directory Services service user account was assigned the following special privileges and that you log in to Windows by using this account before you install Directory Services:
    • Local Administrator privilege
    • Logon as a service privilege
For more information, see the Service User Account.

Restrictions

Round-trip latency to the Cisco Unified MeetingPlace Audio Server must be less than 100ms.

You can install Cisco Unified MeetingPlace Directory Services on a dedicated Cisco MCS or with only the following Cisco Unified MeetingPlace components and integration applications:

  • Cisco Unified MeetingPlace Web Conferencing
  • Cisco Unified MeetingPlace H.323/SIP IP Gateway
  • Cisco Unified MeetingPlace for Microsoft Outlook
  • Cisco Unified MeetingPlace for IBM Lotus Notes

Do not install Directory Services with any other applications or products.

  1. Log in to the Windows server by using an account that meets the criteria specified in Service User Account and was entered in the Completing the Installation Worksheet.
  2. Insert the Directory Services CD into the Windows server CD-ROM drive and click Next.
  3. (Optional) If the installation wizard fails to start (for example, autorun is disabled), complete the following steps:
    1. Choose Run from the Windows Start menu.
    2. Enter x:\directoryservices.exe, where x: refers to the CD-ROM drive letter.
    3. Click OK and wait while the Directory Services files are extracted.
After the setup files are extracted, Cisco Unified MeetingPlace services are automatically stopped.
  4. To install Directory Services in the default directory, click Next from the Choose Destination Location window.
Note: We recommend that you accept the default installation directory to ensure compatibility with the file path information contained in the default configuration files that are supplied with Directory Services.
  5. In the Enter Password window, enter and reenter the password that allows you to log in to this Windows server. This account must have local administrative rights.
  6. Enter and re-enter the Directory Services Administrator password in the fields provided. This is the value you entered in the Completing the Installation Worksheet.
Note: This password becomes the login password for the Directory Service Administration console, which is the graphical user interface (GUI) for accessing Directory Services.
  7. To accept C:\mpdslogs as the default directory for the Directory Services suspense (error) logs, click Next.
  8. To begin installation, click Yes.
Caution! During installation and reboot, DOS prompt windows appear. Do not close these windows or the installation will fail.
  9. After Directory Services is installed, click OK.
  10. Choose the option to reboot your computer and click Finish.
If other Cisco Unified MeetingPlace products (such as Cisco Unified MeetingPlace Web Conferencing) are installed and configured on this computer, you have completed installation.
    or
If no other Cisco Unified MeetingPlace products are installed and configured on this computer, continue with Step 11.
  11. In the MeetingPlace Server Entry window, if you are using DNS, enter the hostname of the Cisco Unified MeetingPlace Audio Server.
    or
If you are not using DNS, enter the server IP address.
  12. Click Next.
  13. Enter the IP address of the Directory Services server and click Next.
    The computer will now reboot.
  14. After the computer has rebooted and the login prompt appears, log in by using the same account that you used during the previous stages of this installation.
After login, installation continues with the initialization of the directory database. After the database is initialized, installation is complete.
